Neil Marshall on Doomsday

April 3rd, 2009 by Red Steele

So, you’ve stumbled upon the second page of the Neil Marshall interview. Well then…

What follows, are some funny recollections of this shoot.

A very cool setting, equiped with adequate lighting. We had requested a duo-interview, with both Neil Marshall and Axelle Carolyn, since she had also worked on the movie. We imagined it would be fun having them interact and comment on each other’s anecdotes. We were promised a 30 minutes time-frame. It all sounded swell.

Neil Marshall on Doomsday crw 7070 150x99 video interviews Upon arrival on the day of shooting, we were informed – one hour before the actual interview would take place – that the location had changed. Things like this happen; you just roll with it. No cool dungeon anymore, but a big, cold looking room, with a white wall, high windows, a nasty echo and too much natural daylight. Oh well, so be it…

We did our little set-up and not much later Neil – who had been doing some other interviews in the dungeon up until then – entered the room. Alone. He was completely surprised when we asked him where Axelle was, Neil Marshall on Doomsday crw 7089 150x99 video interviews since this was supposed to be a duo-interview. Nobody told him. Nobody told Axelle either, apparantly. She had just left for the festival again. Neil even offered to go get her, but there was no time. We had to start the interview.

Since we prepared the interview with the two of them in mind, naturally we had to throw most of the questions out of the window. Oh well, a little bit of improvising then… So we decided to add some questions about his previous two films, and Neil Marshall on Doomsday crw 7087 150x99 video interviews that’s what we started the interview with. The second half of the interview we had initially planned to be about Doomsday anyway, regardless the new circumstances. Bad move, or so we were to find out. After about 10 minutes, a steward came up to us (in between questions) informing that we had to wrap up the interview. By that time we hadn’t even asked one single question about Doomsday yet. What happened to the remaining 20 minutes, all of the sudden?

Boy, sure didn’t see this one coming…

But somehow, someway, we managed to stretch the interview to 15 minutes, or so. Nobody got hurt, nobody got angry. And luckily we did get Neil Marshall on Doomsday crw 7095 2 150x99 video interviews away with squeezing in some additional Doomsday questions, asking him about the nature of the beast, the art of blending genres and shooting on location in Cape Town, South Africa. All-in-all, the interview turned out to be a fun chat, not in the least because of Neil’s honest enthusiasm. Maybe he might have sensed we sincerely liked his movies and it rubbed off a little bit… No idea, but things worked out fine.

Anyway, so this is the ‘Doomsday-cut’ of the interview. Due to publishing formats, we had to deliver a 5-minute cut. Coincidentally, the footage we did manage to have on the Doomsday topic, was just enough to fill up those 5 minutes. And we needed that, as the film would start its theatrical run a couple of weeks after the festival. Mission accomplished, how insignificant a mission it might seem.

On a final note, special thanks to El Bertones, for involuntarily causing the “poster-incident”. This will probably haunt us for the rest of our days… Neil Marshall on Doomsday icon wink video interviews
