Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning

Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning star wreck 87x120 full length moviesDirector: Timo Vuorensola
Writer: Rudi Airisto, Jarmo Puskala, Samuli Torssonen (creator)
Release Year: 2005

I normally dislike parodies and most indie movies, but this one is an exception to the rule.  Star Wreck is a no-budget movie featuring effects that can rival Hollywood blockbusters and certainly beats them in terms of wit, story, humour and, well, everything else. Except maybe the acting from some of the less important characters but that’s to be expected when they’re mostly friends  and relatives.

When Horror and Film Noir collide!

Historically, it’s always thought that after living a time of great splendor in America during the first decade of sound, the horror genre disappeared in the 40s, the years of World War II, to cede its place to the propaganda of war films, the paranoia of spy films, and the cynicism of Film Noir. Horror is supposed to be dormant, only to be resurrected in the 50s with Atom era horrors and the films of Hammer Studio.

The Fall of the House of Usher

The Fall of the House of Usher usher1 97x120 full length moviesTo commemerate Edgar Allan Poe’s 200th birthday this very day, I thought it would be appropriate to break my rule of one  movie a week and present you these wonderful films based on Poe’s story The Fall of the House of Usher. Both films are made in 1928 and are silent movies. If you don’t want to offend Edgar Allan Poe’s ghost, you should at least watch the fantastic surreal shortfilm by James Sibley Watson, but if you want to show his rotting corpse the respect it so deserves you’d better watch the full movie by Jean Epstein too.

The Last Man on Earth

The Last Man on Earth lastmanonearth 82x120 full length moviesDirector: Ubaldo Ragona & Sidney Salkow
Writer: Richard Matheson (novel “I Am Legend”) & William F. Leicester
Release Year: 1964

Alive among the lifeless… alone among the crawling creatures of evil that make the night hideous with their inhuman craving!

An adaptation of the novel I Am Legend about a man trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world, defending his home against hordes of zombie-vampires every night. There are many adaptations of this book and this is considered by many the best (the people with taste), which is not that surprising since it has Vincent Price instead of Will freakin’ Smith or Charlton cold dead hands Heston. And because the mood of the movie set by the desperation and loneliness of Morgan ofcourse. Also notice the similarities with Night of the Living Dead, released 4 years later.
