You know, that’s just not funny.

Rich bitch Desiree Cartier (Taylor Cole) and her butthead brother Blaine (Josh Henderson) plan a prank to ruin the reputation of fellow rich bitch Milan Hastings (Sabrina Aldridge) at a débutante coming out party they throw for Torrance Caldwell (Scout Taylor-Compton). Milan dies after stumbling off a balcony when she has a bad reaction to the roofies they used to romance her. A year later, they find out that someone knows what they did last April fool’s day….

The characters in this piece do not really help to make it especially enjoyable since they are all scumbags. In addition to the Cartiers and the shallow actress Torrance, we have others. Peter Welling (Samuel Child), scumbag politician wannabe with a reptilian smile, killed by an ‘accident’. Along with Peter, we have his wife Barbie (Jennifer Siebel) who is about as appealing as the doll of the same name—she seems to be somewhat plasticky, both in personality and in appearance—she gets electrocuted, which is as close to being cute as she gets. There’s Charles Lansford (Joseph McKelheer) who is a gay non-swimmer, the first part is relevant only so far as we get a couple of cheap jokes—he has a toy dog and is fashionable—while the second part is relevant because he drowns in a fabulous gold lamé pair of short shorts in his pool. Finally, there is Ryan (Joe Egender), we all know a guy like Ryan, someone who thinks he’s Stanley Kubrick, but is more like that weird stalker guy who hangs out by the corner store to take pictures of your shoes as you walk by? Hi right back to you. Ryan gets his throat slashed as a rather firm sort of rejection. The thing about these characters is that I couldn’t care less if one of them was fed to the horrible Black Beast of Arrgh, actually, I would prefer that they be fed to it as soon as possible, they suck.

They're talking respectfully.

The plot of this demazing film is anything short of stunning. The plot of someone killing off a bunch of attractive young people to make them atone for some crime they committed is nothing new, and there is little innovation. The kills are lackluster and the acting is nothing particularly special either. For a film that is meant to be a remake of an admittedly lousy film, this one seems to have little in common besides a very basic idea. The film seems more intent on remaking I Know What You Did Last Summer mixed with bits from Final Destination than reworking the story of the original. The whole “young people conceal a crime” genre is not especially interesting to begin with since it requires that the protagonists be jerkoffs or otherwise a waste of skin. Let me mention right now, apropos of nothing, that fried pig skin is extremely tasty and should never be wasted. Just thought I should clear that up. Since the people in the film that we normally are supposed to either root for or be interested in are made that much less worthwhile, and making them the equivalent of the people that I was careful to never watch on Party of Dawson’s 90210 or whatever the damned thing was called. To me, rich people dying is great, but I’d rather they didn’t talk.

The mysterious man in black tries to silence her whining.

The twist, or should I say ‘twists’, is one of the few things left from the original film. That’s right, after all is said and done the reason for all the killings is a kind of revenge over money. Money, how great. What makes it better is, like the original, this film is a big cheat in that there are only two real deaths, the rest are all fakes. The problem with this movie that was not present in the original is why do the people act normally for the camera even though it will make no difference to Desiree since she won’t see it? Consider the first fake murder, Charles acts as if something is going on even when he’s not being filmed for the footage meant to impress Desiree, what kind of base stupidity is this? Of course, this is done to fool the audience, but it’s stupid. Moving onward, the twist that it was all a trick to mess with Desiree to get her to confess to her crimes so she loses her control of the family money is idiotic enough as at any time it could have gone horribly wrong and resulted in an actual death, which would have put Blaine—how I hate that name, if your parents named you ‘Blaine’ it’s proof they didn’t love you, they saw you as an accessory—right on track to go to jail without collecting $200. As it was he should have been held accountable for his actions since, by masterminding the entire thing, he got his sister killed; that’s involuntary manslaughter at the very least. Instead we get a little grin at the end like he somehow set things up so his sister died. Yeah, really likely.
