Gwen, Dave, Max and Jo are the winners of a contest organized by the social network site All2Gether.com. Their prize? A trip to New York in a luxurious private jet. Once on board, they have to take place in four seats, each having their own monitors. The game continues and the rules are simple: they’ll have to answer questions about themselves. If the answers are wrong, it will result in one of their friends or family members dying before their eyes, displayed on the monitors. The key question that remains, though… Who is behind all of this?

Let’s throw a bunch of characters together in a confined space and see what happens, part 5. The confined space in this case being an airplane. A bit remarkable that it took 4 people to write a screenplay that essentially boils down to not much more than ‘Saw’ on a plane. Honestly, we get four unlikeable characters and a killer (unseen right up ’til the very end of the movie) who’s motivations are as clichéd as they can be. Moreover, given who the killer is, you’ll really start questioning how on earth he was able to pull off his stunts in the first place (renting a private jet is only one of the puzzling events, let alone getting a hold of the family members). The only fairly new thing this torture-esque effort has to offer, is the social network angle from the premise. Aside from that, we get the usual bickering between the characters and their situation getting more serious (and hopeless) as we go along. If you manage to not loose your interest at some point, the final result still isn’t anything to get all excited over.

THE AWAKENING

30 Movies From Bifff 2012 The Awakening 2011 84x120 thriller reviews sci fi romance reviews horror fantasy drama comedy action Director: Nick Murphy
Writer:
Stephen Volk & Nick Murphy
Release Year:
2011

1921. Florence is a skeptic, educated woman who, after the loss of her lover in World War I, dedicated her life to refuting the supernatural. Due to her reputation as England’s most notorious ‘ghost-buster’, teacher Robert Mallory gets in touch with her. He explains his boarding school is being plagued by a child ghost, and the supernatural occurrences are increasing in strength and frequency. While the boarding school’s past starts to unravel itself, Florence faces her greatest ordeal so far.

‘The Awakening’ offers us a mild ghost story of which I wished it had just amped up the spookiness a bit, but its subtle ways do speak in favor of it. There’s a certain well thought-out complexity to Stephen Volk and Nick Murphy‘s script, developing at a slow but suitable pace and revealing its layers near the end. While initially the plot seems to focus on whether or not Florence will be able to refute the supernatural goings-on, the third act of the film still has some surprises in store. And rest assure, there’s a fine ambiguous nature to the denouement. Murphy prefers mood, atmosphere and the slow building of tension instead of going for jump scares, and the sequence where Florence is inspecting the doll house is a prime example of this. Things do get a little heavy on the drama, but this approach does create some characters that are solidly rooted in the plot. Great, down-toned performances carry the film and a decent mystery lies at the core of the story. Rebecca Hall proves to be an intriguing and very capable leading lady. Elegantly photographed and emotionally engaging, ‘The Awakening’ turned out a fine symbiosis between style and content, thereby firmly placing itself between traditional British haunted house movies like Jack Clayton‘s classic ‘The Innocents’ (1961) and Lewis Gilbert‘s often overlooked ‘Haunted’ (1995). And it’s a fine, quality addition to the more recent wave of Spanish ghost movies like ‘El Orfanato’ (2007), ‘Nos Miran’ (2002) and ‘No-do’ (2009).

Five medical school students take on an assignment to gain extra grades. They’ll have to take a field trip to an abandoned mining town of which it is said to be haunted. Their assignment consists of finding proof that there is life after death. But something is waiting for them. It’s the ghost of Dr. Matarga, who was known for performing legendary acts of butchery during the Civil War.

Very formulaic supernatural slasher in the vein of (slightly above) average (production-wise) genre efforts like David R. Ellis‘Asylum’ (2008). Appreciated for trying to offer its audience some creepy atmosphere, a couple of gory killings and a new villain who’s on-screen charisma is just about memorable enough. But then again, ‘Paranormal Xperience’ doesn’t bring much new to the table. Again, the weak point are probably the main characters, which are a bunch of teens you can hardly root for. The two sisters (the leading ladies, of which the most psychologically scarred one is most susceptible to the supernatural influence; an aspect of the script like a twist of lemon that makes any drink a better one) do bring their own history along, yet the remaining bunch are only there to serve as meat for the grinder. ‘Paranormal Xperience’ succeeds in being supernatural entertainment; just don’t expect much more from it. The film could have done without the 3D treatment, as it adds little extra value to the picture. If you’ve enjoyed Spain’s previous recent supernatural horror outings like ‘The Nun’ (2005), then you’re good to give ‘XP’ a watch. Otherwise, you’ll find little of interest here.

BEAST

30 Movies From Bifff 2012 beast 2011 81x120 thriller reviews sci fi romance reviews horror fantasy drama comedy action Director: Christoffer Boe
Writer:
Christoffer Boe
Release Year:
2011

After Bruno and Maxine buy their dream house, the decline of the love between them commences. That is to say, when Maxine starts a relationship with Valdemar, a good friend of the couple, Bruno’s love for her becomes destructively obsessional. In a desperate attempt to separate Maxine and Valdemar, Bruno begins to play sick games with both of them, all the more fueled by his own madness.

Christoffer Boe‘s ‘Beast’, much like Shinya Tsukamoto‘s ‘Kotoko’, is an emotionally exhausting as well as psychologically haunting experience. Both films are close encounters with extremely dysfunctional human relationships in such a way that they’re able to inflict pain and discomfort upon the viewer (it’s either that, or if you’re an emotionally detached human being you might as well get bored with sitting your way through these films). From the poster art to the storyline about a tormented triangular relationship between the three main characters, ‘Beast’ shows suspicious analogies to Andrzej Zulawski’s ‘Possession’ (1981), though shying away from the more monstrous features of the latter and focusing more on the disquieting inner conflicts of the characters. And both the performances as well as the raw urbanesque cinematography draws you close to the characters. It’s something you’ll either like or repel. Marijana Jankovic confidently twists herself with great verve into the demanding role of Maxine, trying to emerge from the smothering relationship she has with the deeply confused Bruno (another fine, uncomfortable performance by Nicolas Bro). Anders Thomas Jensen regular and all-round excellent actor Nikolaj Lie Kaas serves the plot as a possible means to Maxine’s salvation as Valdemar, her new lover. ‘Beast’ really is a strange beast, partially about a relationship broken beyond repair, but also about mental decline inevitably having staggering, harmful effects on the human body.

THE CABIN IN THE WOODS

30 Movies From Bifff 2012 cabin in the woods poster02 83x120 thriller reviews sci fi romance reviews horror fantasy drama comedy action Director: Drew Goddard
Writer:
Joss Whedon & Drew Goddard
Release Year:
2011

Five friends go to a remote cabin in the woods to have some fun. Of course an old local fellow will warn them not to go. Of course they’ll go and awake something from its ancient slumber. Of course they will die gruesome deaths. Wait, haven’t we seen this before? Think again.

Genius writer/producer/director Joss Whedon teams up with long time friend/writer Drew Goddard to bring us Goddard‘s directorial debut ‘The Cabin In The Woods’. And it turned out a clever, self-aware horror-pulp mélange free from pretentiousness. It’s more like a fun roller coaster ride than it is a genuinely scary movie, but nevertheless horror fans should find this a delicious menu to sink their teeth into. You may expect various genre references, playing with the rules of horror, some witty dialogues and enlarged stereotypes. What starts off as Whedon & Goddard making fun of Sam Raimi‘s ‘The Evil Dead’, will soon venture into different territory and a whole new ballgame altogether. The screenplay punctures itself on regular occasions to make the viewer aware of the fact that what you’re watching isn’t really what’s going on in this movie. So what’s going on exactly? Not until the third act it all gets revealed, and rest assured that things will go over the top in a grotesque manner. The cast is game, the special effects are great and the whole movie is simply fun to sit through. Whedon & Goddard managed to present us a fairly original concept, with a smile and a wink. And that grin-inducing cameo by Sigourney Weaver was simply the icing on the cake.
