THE PINKY VIOLENCE RATINGS:

Ratings are overrated anyway, so let’s rate the Pinku films… on the Vomitron Scale.

In all honesty, I have to tell you that I had been simply avoiding these infamous ‘pinky violence’ films (commonly known as pinku across the ocean), ever since I learned about their existence. Up until then, I had already been familiar with different sorts of Japanese films, containing blood, gore, sex, violence & horror, whether through live action movies or mangas & their animated counterparts (I should also include Japanese artfilms & Akira Kurosawa epics, pretty much trying to cover a wide variety from films like Shinya Tsukamoto‘s first Tetsuo to gems like Hirokazu Koreeda‘s Afterlife, just to illustrate where I’m coming from). But pinku seemed just a genre to me that had no appeal whatsoever as well as little added values to offer. Oh, how ever was I so wrong…

On with the ratings and ramblings!

Keep in mind that initially we’re talking about Women-In-Prison films here (though only the first one really is one). A genre I’ve never really liked, nor will I ever embrace it (unless I live long enough to become senile, so I’m not responsible for my actions & sayings anymore). But these three films in Shunya Ito‘s initial ‘Scorpion Trilogy’, of which Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion is the first, without a doubt, transcend the genre. Not only are they simply better made, they also incorporate elements from so many other subgenres that it becomes a cocktail you honestly have never ever tasted before. For sure not in this fashion, to say the least.

Female Convict Scorpion: Jailhouse 41 is, from a critical point of view, the best one out of Ito‘s inital trilogy. And it’s my favorite too. Visually speaking, I’m pretty sure this one will blow your mind. If not anybody’s, then for sure the minds of everyone who is a) expecting another WIP film, or b) a rehash of the best elements of the first film for a sequel. This second ‘Female Convict Scorpion’ film displays a mise-en-scène never-before-seen in any exploitation film. At least not to my knowledge. Half of the film is pure art & surreal fantasy, a joy to behold.

While almost completely lacking the visual artistry from the previous installment, Beast Stable does yet again something different and does not skimp on disturbing themes and shocking content either, incorporating even cannibalism & incest this time. Another exciting entry, though not reaching the same level of perplexity as Jailhouse 41 did.

I can safely say I find Sex And Fury to be the least good one out of the bunch. It has not much additional merits, aside from a copulous amount of female nudity and a weird, dual story-line, both stories developing at an equal pace, but both are also pretty downright idiotic. Still, it’s worth watching and it’s fun (albeit often also unintentially funny).

Female Yakuza Tale is the sequel to Sex And Fury and is actually a bit better. The silly dual-plot (featuring one story about a secret agent with love-from-the-past issues in a foreign country) is dropped, and this time it’s more about “fun” stuff like drugsmuggling & heroin(e)-junkie-female-hookers. Both films keep the Yakuza & Revenge angle, of course. Female Yakuza Tale also has a stupendous finale, featuring an all-out-assault sword battle in a hangar between the Yakuza males and about two dozens of naked Japo-babes revolting. You’ll believe it, when you see it.

Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter, aside from Ito‘s ‘Scorpion Trilogy’, is my follow-up favorite, as the main girls in it are such tremendous cool cats and the story itself can actually be taken pretty serious, featuring topics like racism, revenge, gang rivalry and shameless product placement so blatant it becomes hilarious (okay, that last part doesn’t count as “serious”… or maybe it does, as we’re talking very serious product placement here). Plus, it features an almost western-style show-down near the end and a reminder that those Japanese folks are no suckers for happy endings. There’s a bit of hunting, yes, but you can forget about the sex. This one was made in 1970 and wasn’t all about exploiting female nudity yet. Pretty much on the contrary. Of course, some girl might get raped along the way. That kind of comes with the territory.

You could easily team Girl Boss Guerilla up with Stray Cat Rock Hunter (minus the Sex), as a double feature (thank you, good folks at Offscreen). The first half is damned entertaining and actually reminded me of Jack Hill‘s Switchblade Sisters, obviously because of the rivalling girl gangs in the city of Kyoto. Lots of cat fights, foul play & offensive things going on here. Though near the end, the fun stagnates a bit because the film trades a lot of the entertaining stuff in for too much nudity & sex (I never thought I’d say that of any exploitation film). The finale, featuring a brief car chase, is enjoyable, but also silly and ineptly staged.

Do not ask me why this one gets a 4/5 rating. Ask Vomitron. He’s the sick one, not me. Or you could go read a full review.
